Monty Sends His Petition to Regulators
The "Save MySQL" petition by MySQL creator Monty Widenius, was recently delivered to three international regulatory bodies including the EU, the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS), and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM). He also plans to send the petition to regulatory bodies in Japan, Brazil, and Switzerland. The petition asks regulators (primarily) to force Oracle to divest MySQL. Florian Mueller, a campaign organizer, says the petition has over 14,000 signatures and will be sent to antitrust authorities one to two times a week until the petition is recognized.
BeautifulPeople.com is Boots Undesirables
You can probably guess what BeautifulPeople.com is supposed to be. It's a social networking site exclusively for a "beautiful community." The site takes pride in not letting "ugly" people join the site. It's no surprise that recently, the website booted 5,000 users for 'letting themselves go' over the holiday season. Apparently 'vigilant members' found holiday pictures of people who had gained some weight. What's even more sad is the fact that over 5,000 people actually buy in to this elitist message.
Freescale Beats Apple to the Punch with Android Tablet
With people in a frenzy over the alleged Apple Tablet, it seems that Freescale has flown in under the radar and stolen Apple's thunder by releasing a seven inch touchscreen tablet that runs Android or Linux. The tablet is priced at $200 and could hit the shelves as early as this summer. It's significant that the device features an ARM processor because Intel's Atom processor currently dominates the netbook market.
Lemon Ripens
A unit testing framework for Ruby, Lemon, is in the early stages of development. The 0.6 version was just released and the author says it's quite usable. The framework enforces a one-to-one correspondence between test cases/units and classes/methods. Ruby users might want to take a look.
Google Collections 1.0 final released
Many Java developers are thanking Google today in DZone's top link in 24 hours. Google just released their final version of Collections Library 1.0. It's a natural extension of the Java Collections Framework and it's full of new collection types, implementations, and related goodness for Java 5 and higher. Go get it!
